I was busy the beginning of this year getting images ready for my first photo show in May. It was a great success and had about 200 people show up for the show. I can't wait to do another show this year. I am trying to decide where to go photograph this year since I did not win the lottery this year to go to McNeil. I have to try each year to go, but not lucky this year. I had considered to go to Alaska this year, but have too much to do around the house to go this year. A storm did some damage to my fence that I spent most of last summer building, so I have been busy rebuilding that. I missed a lot of great waterfall pics while re-building the fence! I hope to do more postings as time permits.
-mark

</blogitemtitle>

Happy New Year!

<blogitemtitle>A happy new year to you! I have been busy riding bikes this year as well as making some new ones (bicycles). I have converted a few old 10 speed bikes into some really nice single speed bikes. They are so much fun to ride around town. We have put on a few alleycat races and had a blast doing them. Hope to do some more in the fall. I'll post some more soon. I like the simplicity of a single speed as well as the low maintenance. I took my bike to my local bike shop (Poppa Wheelie) and had Doug do the conversion. Doug had an a wheel he had re-dished and made special for a single speed conversion. I thought it was a great idea and had been wanting to do this for some time now. I have several other bikes, but thought this old commuter bike would make a great single speed bike.

Friday I picked up the bike as well as took my other commuter bike to get some new handlebars put on. While Doug worked on my KHS Urban Xtreme, I took the OLD KHS out for a ride around town. WOW! This feels so OLD SKOOL! I buzzed around town and seemed like I was riding my old BMX bike. This was so much fun! When I got back to the bike shop there was no doubt about my happiness with the conversion, I had a smile like a kid who had just got a new bike! Thanks Doug for all the work and I know I will have a blast on the bike.
-mark

Me at the Big Dam Bridge

 Me at the Big Dam Bridge
Originally uploaded by bmwrider
Sunday I went to ride the new 12 million dollar bicycle bridge in Little Rock. They call it the Big Dam Bridge and it is impressive. It rises 90 feet above the Arkansas River and is about 4400 feet long. There is about a 12.5 mile loop that winds along the river on both sides and ends up downtown Little Rock along the River Walk trail. A very nice ride and great for family rides. We saw lots of cyclists today as well as joggers and walkers. I'll post a few more images from the ride. We rode 20 miles today and most of it in the rain. We loaded up our gear and headed to get some free breakfast at the hotel lobby. Normal stuff, but it saved a lot of time looking for some place to eat. We dressed warm for the ride to Silverton, but we would later in the day start sheading some clothes at it warms up. The road to Silverton is nice and has some spectacular views. Once we made our way to Silverton, we found a place to get a soda and rest for a little bit. We ended up at the Brown Bear Cafe..I like the sound of that. There were about a dozen BMW riders there as well as other bikers. The place was busy and I bet the breakfast was good. Max was not hungry, so we just had a Coke and a smile.

The road out of Silverton has some of the most spectacular views of the Colorado mountains. Between Silverton and Ouray, the view is worth a million bucks. Maybe that's why the call it the million dollar highway. We did not stop at Ouray because we were in a hurry to get to Ridgeway to eat some lunch. After lunch at Subway, we were on the road to Telluride. The road and views were some of my favorite so far. Lots of fields of flowers, old buildings and mountain scenes around every curve. If I was on a photo trip, I could spend several days here. Once we got into Telluride, we saw lots of people out in the streets and the Mountain Film Festival was in full swing. Took a few pics and we were off to Ridgeway, and then to Gunnison. The road to Gunnison from Montrose is a lot faster than any of the other roads so far and not as scenic. We did follow Black Canyon Lake for a long time. We did not run into any rain today and that was a good thing. We took about 30 minutes or so to unload the motorcycles and then we were on our way. The exit to Highway 12 was blocked off for construction, so we had to take a detour in Trinidad till we fond the way. Hwy 12 was a nice ride and we went through the Colorado country side with a majestic view of the mountains in the background. It was a very nice ride till we connected with the highway that leads to Durango.

The highlight of the day was going through wolf creek pass at 10,800 feet. There was snow on the ground and the view was so nice. Took some photos and headed down the back side of the pass to Durango. I was tired after the 300 miles and needed to recharge before going to downtown Durango. We went downtown and they were having a block party with a live band and the people were enjoying themselves. We hung around for a few minutes to listen to a few songs. Then we walked around downtown to check out the town. Back at the hotel we are blogging and watching the weather channel. Looks like rain tomorrow. Hope it goes away.

I'll post some more pics tonight.
-mark
</blogitemtitle>

Ready to rest for the night.

<blogitemtitle>It's been a long day and I am ready to go to bed. I filled up with gas near my home in Knoxville and paid $3.49 a gallon for fuel. We paid $3.22 and $3.36 later in the day. We found 5 geocaches along the way today and that was about all we had time for today. Our main objective was to get to Raton, NM in about 14 hours. The roads were very rough in Oklahoma and we had to stop once to tighten down the bikes. It's hard to believe how bad the roads are out here.

There is not much to look at on the road through OK and TX. We stopped at several rest stops that had geocaches and logged them and quickly hit the road again. Later on down the road we stopped to get gas and me saw a man carry his dog across the parking lot to go do his business. Then he picked the cattle dog back up and returned him to the truck. I said "The dog has you trained!" He responded that the dog makes him $150,000 a year and does tricks, rides horses, and other tricks at rodeos. He gave me a coloring book of the dog and horse, so I will have to check it out when I get home. He said he was much better than Skid Boot and I had told him I had seen Skid Boot in action several years ago. We wished each other luck and a safe trip and we were on our way.

Down the road in Texas we stopped at a leaning water tower that is along the famous old route 66. The tower was made to lean in hopes it would bring some tourist dollars to the town. We stopped for a photo opp with James the travel gnome as well as a kidnapped orange cup of a friend. We are having fun! Later we stop by one of the largest crosses I have ever seen. The large metal cross has lots of statues below it and it is a real nice area to stop and reflect.

I'll post some more later.
-mark
</blogitemtitle>

Motorcycles loaded, ready to go.

 Motorcycles loaded, ready to go.
Originally uploaded by bmwrider.
Here is the configuration of the bikes on the trailer. After doing lots of photography trips to various places, I have learned to test things before a trip. My friend Kevin from New York always makes sure that we test things before we go. It is an essental concept to do, because the middle of no where is the last place you want to see if something will work. I make lists, he makes lists and then we compare and do this process till everything is right. Max and I have been doing this for this trip also by using Google's Gmail to do this. In Gmail you can set up documents you can share with other users and allow them to edit them. Everyone involved in the document gets to see the changes when they are made. You should try it!

I get my laptop out last night and start doing some prep work for the trip in Photoshop. I wanted to play with the actual size image from my new snapshot digital camera to see how I wanted to format them for the blog. Got my card reader out and placed the SD card in and it would not read. Strange I thought.....I tried it again and no luck. I gave it to Becky to try on her laptop and it did not read. Well crap, it worked the other day. I took it to my other two computers and it did not work. This had me a little worried and my brain began to click with ideas. I went and got another SD card that I use in my GPS and plugged it in and it worked! Plugged the other card from the camera and it did not work. I figured I would need to use the cord to transfer the images from the camera to the laptop. This mornning I took one of my other SD cards and took a picture and the card reader read the SD card. So the Sandisk card reader will not read the Sandisk SD card, but it will read the PNY SD card. I can't figure out why it does it, but I have a work-around to get the images of the card. Strange, but that's what happens when you play with geek toys!

Now it is time to go check out some other things on the list. I'll be posting some of my planning thoughts as well as welcome comments from you experienced riders.
-mark
</blogitemtitle>

Project 52 - 4 The Glory Hole

 The Glory Hole from the edge of the cave.
Originally uploaded by bmwrider.
This is the fouth in my Project 52 series I am doing this year. At least I have a day off during the week to get some things done. Saw an old friend at McD's today that I used to work with who is now with the fire department. It was good to talk to him and tell him about all the crazy things at the plant. Some of the stuff is just crazy to people that don't work there. I am just love having a wireless hot spot to check the email and catch up on the blog while eating a bite. Of course it seems all my last posts are from here! D'oh!

Life goes on! It seems like life is in the fast lane and not enough people take the time to see what is around them. I know my daughter is growing up way to fast. Won't be long till a hug or a kiss from her dad will not be cool and we will just say hi and bye just like everyone else. She will always be my little girl no matter how big her pants get! It's a nice day out and I think I will go enjoy some time out side mowing and cleaning up around the house. Hope things slow down enough to do some more posts later. Today I meet Lynne at Mc D's and we are going to do some local geocaching around town. I have been working on my McNeil blog over the past few days and hope to have it finished in a few days. Lynne did the edit of my journal and it looks great! The only thing is that there is one day missing in the journal. It seems that I was abducted by aliens and there was no record in my journal for that day. I don't remember anything but the flashing lights around the tent......well maybe not? My laptop is several years old, but still works just fine for stuff like this.

I bougt me a new Targus backpack to carry my laptop around a bit more since there are so many wireless hotspots around town. I used to carry the laptop in a Targus laptop case, but it was too bulky and heavy. This back pack seems to be the solution for the time being. I am a bag nut, so if I see something better, I will get it. I hope to upload some Alaska pics to the blog soon.
-mark
</blogitemtitle>

Eagle Landing

Eagle Landing
Originally uploaded by bmwrider.

Blogging here from Alaska. I have been there once, and many people have tried to win the lottery to be able to go to McNeil. They only let 140 people in a year and there are a lot of people that apply for a permit each year. Winners if they are Alaska residents will pay $150 to get the permit. Out of towners like myself have to pay $350 for the permit. A small price to pay for a great chance to photograph bears.

Now all the list making, planning, buying, etc. is taking place right now. Join me at my McNeil website for all the info:
http://ozarkimages.squarespace.com
-mark

New top case in for BMW.

I decided I needed a top case for the R1100RS to go along with the BMW system cases. This will be a nice addition for the motocycle which will allow me to carry a lot more stuff for my daily commute. I ordered it 3 days ago from Bob's BMW and it was delivered today! WOW! That was quick! The box was about 17 pounds and packed very well. I ordered a lock to go along with it because BMW does not include it in the price. It was easy to install and went right on without any problems. I think I am going to like this case.

I tested it out and my full face helmet fits inside the case. The guy at Bob's BMW said it would not fit, but I had hopes that it would. It was a close fit, but I was happy to see the lid close whih the helmet inside. This case will make my daily commute better because I can take my favorite bag with me. I carry a Timbuk2 medium sized messenger bag to carry all the crap I tke to work every day. What's in it? I should take a pic and post it on flickr. Let's see here car keys, knife, ink pens, video iPOD, card reader, D-ring, flash light, sun glasses, reading glasses, cell phone, 2 USB flash drives, wallet, mints, gum, duct tape wallet, beenie, book to read, loose change, key ring of tabs from energy drinks, and my lunch. That's a buch of crap and there is still room for more. I love those bags!
-mark

New HD for the studio.

After all the hard drive crashes over the past week we decided to get another disk for a back-up drive. I bought a 500 gig Lacie Big Disk USB drive to use as general data storage as well as for back-up data. Who would have thought I needed a half a Tera Byte drive, but it turns out I do. As a mater of fact, with the other drives on the system it brings the storage on the computer to almost a Tera Byte. Media storage is a good thing in the days of geek technology.

I have pulled all my hair out trying to setup my crazy server. I guess I am not getting it! I will have to call one of my IT geek friends to help me get this thing up and going. I want to set up a FTP server for the studio with this and maybe I can make it happen. More research to do on this subject.

I am really loving my new video iPOD! This thing is so cool and with 30 gigs of storage I am sure I will not be short on any type of entertainment. I can watch videos, movies, view my favorite photos, and not to mention the gobs of music I can stuff on the thing. The new iPOD is much smaller than last years model and has much better battery usage. I get about 14 hours on run time on it so far. After 6 years of one of my computers running non stop, Windows got stupid and could not find it's self. The day before the crash i had copied all my photos to another drive on another computer and the very next day the HD crashed. It' s all up and running again, but the computer that Becky uses at the studio decided to do the same thing. That was not as easy of a fix. after about 8 hours of placing programs back on and loading pre-sets we werre back up and running. Got to get some serious hard drive back up of some sort.
-mark

New iPOD

Well I broke down and got the new iPOD video the other day. It's only been a year since I had my original iPOD, but it was too tempting to get one. My daughter wanted to buy a Nano, and I asked her what she really wanted, and she said "I really want one like your." So, I decided to sell mine to her and take my Christmas money and get one. I have not loaded any video's on it yet, but it's on the list to do. This is my first day to use it and it jams just like my previous one. One thing I like is that it's a little smaller as well as lighter than the previous model. The bigger color screen is really nice. So far I am enjoying it!

-mark

The name says it all!

blaze1
Originally uploaded by bmwrider.

I was out Geocaching Friday with PigNewton and we went to a cache that is near a salvage area for a local wrecker service when we spot this. Becky wanted to hike up Tater Hill located near her gradma's home. Becky had said when she was about 5 years old they hiked up Tater Hill on a New Years Day. So we decided to do that today. Talia had a friend with her today and we all decided to take the hike to the famous "Tater Hill". Most towns have small mountains near them called "Tator Hill". The map makers ran out of names and just started calling them Tator Hill.

We arrived at the foot of the hill and gathered our packs and proceded to climb the mountain. Having my GPS with me I took note of the elevation. We started at about 540 foot elevation and would end up at about 870 feet. We took off across the field and headed up the mountain. Saw lots of deer tracks along the way. As we entered the forest there was heavy leaf cover on the ground. We were slipping and sliding like it was ice or snow. This will be intresting on the way back down. Doc followed Becky up the mountain, while the girls were up ahead of her and I lead the way up the hill. After about 20 min we were on top of Tater Hill. Nice view of the farm land below and Annies Chappel. Upon top we rested and took some photos of our big adventure. The hardest thing was getting Doc up on the rock.

Going back down I slipped right away and hit the ground hard. It looks like only one way down was on our butts! We started sliding down the mountain and it was like sliding in the snow. The girls were screaming like it was an amusement ride. At the bottom of the mountain we all had dirty pants. What a fun day.
-mark
</blogitemtitle>

Cool old barn.

barn
Originally uploaded by bmwrider.

While out Geocaching the other day, the light caught my eye and I snapped the image with my little point and shoot camera. PigNewton and I headed out to the new "GeoPark , Cabin Creek Recreation Area" to place our caches. It took a lot longer than I thought. After finding the right spot, then we had to measure several sets of coordinates to make sure the readings were right on for the other geocachers. Of course we had to pick the hottest day of the year to do it.

After a hard days work we placed about 9 caches out. Two of them were too close to the other caches we had hid, so we came back on Sunday to fix our little mistake. Geocaches can't be any closer than .1 miles form each other. Oh, well you learn! It was a lot of fun putting out the new caches for everyone to find. You have to check out the one I put out called "You've Got Mail", it is real cool.

-mark
</blogitemtitle>

Yankee Boy

Yankee Boy
Originally uploaded by bmwrider.

Another great wildflower shot from Yankee Boy Basin in Ouray, Colorado. Se we signed up on a 4 wheel drive tour to Yankee Boy Basin. The first part of the day was not as planned, but I have high hopes this will be better. Colorado West Jeep Tours picked us up at the hotel and we were off for the tour. Warren was our driver and he had a great attitude and sense of humor.

As we headed up the mountain the colors started to come out. The flowers were quite spectacular! Wow! The colors were very nice indeed. As we passed old mines and mine towns you got a sense of what it was like for those early miners trying to find their fortune. The rain started to come down and we put on our rain coats and continued up the mountain. The rain stopped after about 30 minutes, and the colors were so vibrant and rich. I love being in the mountains after a rain. We took a few more photos and it was time to head back to town. I will be back up there all day tomorrow with the other photographers from Arkansas. I’ll post some pics later.

-mark

</blogitemtitle>

Roundhouse
